The term ‘Disorder’ relates to the disturbance of function, structure, or both, of an organ or organism. Words and phrases are precisely defined and proper pronunciation is provided.
Terms for ‘Disease’ describe an abnormal condition of the body or mind that causes discomfort, dysfunction or distress to the person afflicted, or to those in contact with the person.
Pathology is the study of diseases. Disease, therefore, applies to terms for a pathologic condition of the body in response to alteration in the normal body harmony, and may be the direct result of trauma, physical agents, and poisons, or the indirect result of genetic anomalies and metabolic and nutritional disturbances.
Disease is a broad term that may be applied to injuries, disabilities, syndromes, infections, symptoms, deviant behaviors, and atypical variations of structure and function. There is a difference between illness and disease. Illness is a term that describes the condition of a person who is experiencing a disease. A disease, on the other hand, is known by its medical classification and distinguishing features.
It is important to note that some diseases have no known cause. The term idiopathic is used to describe such diseases. Sometimes, treatment and its effects in patients cause some diseases. The term iatrogenic is used to describe such diseases. This can be seen in the treatment of some cancers, where chemotherapy drugs may cause severe anemia, or when hepatitis develops as a result of a blood transfusion.
These important subjects are by their nature, exceedingly detailed and complex. In the course, the information is presented in terms that facilitate understanding and comprehension.
The course begins with the important topic of Neoplasms and Cancer with terms and content pertaining to the diagnosis, classification and treatment of neoplasms and cancer.
